Lloyd Ritter Community Service Award

The recipient chosen annually to receive the Lloyd Ritter Community Award possesses many of the attributes that embodied Mr. Ritter; professionalism, loyalty, dedication, humility, encourager, problem solver, sense of humor, courage to make a difference, dependability, commitment.

About Lloyd Ritter (1939-1999)

Lloyd RitterAfter growing up on a dairy farm in Center Square, Pennsylvania, Lloyd joined the U.S. Navy.  He worker for Armed Forces Radio, where he was attached to the Naval Security Group with  assignments in public and media relations with the Navy Commander-in-Chief Pacific and Chief of Naval Education and Training.  Lloyd did national security work throughout the world: Japan, Germany, Alaska, Hawaii and Florida.  After retirement, Lloyd remained active with the American Legion and worked on the Veterans Memorial in Bordentown.

Lloyd earned his education while serving in the military.  He received a Masters of Fine Arts in Radio, Television and Film from the University of West Florida in 1974.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Hawaii in 1969.  Lloyd also attended the United States Army Motion Picture School, in Ft. Benning, Georgia (1964) and the United States Navy Journalism School, in San Diego, California (1957).  He also read and wrote fluent Russian.  Lloyd considered going on for a Ph.D., but never found the time.

Lloyd produced industrial films for Rockwell International in California and RCA in Cherry Hill.  He was the Director of Development for the New Jersey Arts and adjunct professor of Video Production and English at Rowan University and Mercer County College.  Lloyd also worked as a reporter, feature writer and columnist for the Burlington County Times and was host and producer at WBZC 89.1 FM, Burlington County College.

Lloyd contributed to the non-profit community in a variety of ways.  He produced films for the United Way of New York.  He was the Director of Development for the Children’s Home of New Jersey.  Lloyd was an officer in the Director of Volunteers in Associations) DOVIA of Burlington County and a founding member of the Volunteer Center of Burlington County. He was also a loaned executive for the United Way of Burlington County.

Lloyd was also a dedicated family man.  His wife Paulette reports he was a sensitive individual.  Daughter Jessica Ritter Otto calls him her teacher and mentor, teaching her to respect herself and others.  They shared many activities.  Jessica graduated from Albright College and resides in Berks County, Pennsylvania with her husband Rayme and their three children.

Lloyd’s work was also recognized by his peers.  He received awards from the National Association of College Broadcasters, an INDY Award in Cinematography, International Film and Television Festival, US Industrial Film and Video Festival, an EMMY Nomination in Community Outreach Programming.
